“Zoos of Karnataka”- launch of Mobile Application

Zoos are important institutions of educational and cultural landscape of modern civilizations. History reveals, institutions driven by community participation, have better chance of surviving the pandemics. These institutions connect the past to future with capacities to survive the testing times. They always stood for betterment of communities and their surroundings. They play an important role and connect people to conservation efforts of the region. Zoos are integral parts of National conservation strategy, play vital role in Conservation education, Rescue, Relief & Rehabilitation of wild animals. Mysore zoo at Kurughalli Rescue centre received three injured wild Tigers in a span of 10 days in the month of June 2020 and all three are recuperating well.

Since the advent of Covid19, all institutions & organizations thrived by the support of people are badly affected and zoos are no exceptions. People stopped visiting zoos, thus depriving them of the much-needed revenue in the form of entry fee.  Zoos under the Zoo Authority of Karnataka used to attract about 6.5 million visitors annually. During the year 2019-2020, about ` 600 million was realized from visitor’s entry fee with footfall of 6.25 million. Due to the dip in visitor’s numbers, during the current financial year so far only about `5 million revenues were realized, however animal maintenance charges and salaries of staff remained same.

Shri S T SomaSekhar, Co-operation cum Mysore District Incharge Minister Mysore took special interest in animal adoption program of Mysore zoo and helped to mobilise `35 million from his friends, followers & people of his constituency as well as from AKKA for Mysuru Zoo. So far ZAK able to collect donation worth about ` 42.5 million in the current year from all nine Zoos. We thank all donors and appreciate their contributions in the noble cause of conservation.

There are many queries about animal adoption & contribution in social media and necessity of easy mode of adoption & contribution to all zoos in the state. Common People often ask, how can we be part of the conservation efforts? Can we contribute `50 or 100? All these years Zoos under ZAK, survived due to support of common people. Development taken place at Mysore and Banneraghatta zoos, is a testimony to support of millions of visitors all these years.

In order to facilitate general public and animal lovers, “Zoos of Karnataka” mobile application is made available at Google Play Store and Apple Store at free of cost to download and contribute any amount from ` 50 onwards. ZAK greatly acknowledge all contributions.
